The Andhra Pradesh Government is celebrating the birthday of freedom fighter and revolutionary leader from Andhra Pradesh, Alluri Sitarama Raju (1897-1924), as a state event today.

Minister for Education G. Srinivas formally inaugurated the celebrations this morning and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was also slated to participate in some programmes later in the day.

A native of Mogallu village near Bhimavaram in West Godavari district, Raju had organised the famous Rampa Rebellion against British rule in the agency areas of the coastal districts by organising tribals during 1922-24. He attained martyrdom when British police shot him in the head in a major operation.
