Internal security will be the core issue Narendra Modi is expected to take up as soon as he assumes office as Prime Minister.

Sources close to Modi said that the BJP leader believes that internal security is key to economic growth. This is the first issue he will take up once he starts reviewing the performances of various ministries.

As is the protocol, the first Cabinet meeting will be on May 27.

From May 28, various Ministries and Department’s of the Government will start making their presentations. “Each Ministry is likely to be given 15 minutes or so to make their presentations,” another official said.

At present, internal security is handled by the Home Ministry, but there is a thinking to create a Department of Internal Security reporting to the Prime Minister’s office.

Other core issues will be the economic state of the country and defence.

Asked about trimming of the Ministries, sources said that at present there are divergent views emerging within the party, some in favour of merging two ministries and others against it. The intent is to make ministries smart in terms of delivery, sources added.
