Employees go on flash strike for higher wages

Power consumers in Andhra Pradesh are facing severe hardship as the flash strike by electricity employees for the second consecutive day has crippled generation and supply.

The employees of AP Transco, distribution companies and AP Genco and other staff covering the electricity sector of the State are on strike seeking revision of their wages.

This has resulted in lower generation in several of the State-owned AP Genco plants bringing down the overall generation and also impacting the supply of power to both urban and rural areas of the State.

The talks between the employees units and the representatives from the Government were inconclusive till evening.

The demand-supply mismatch and severe summer has added to consumer woes. The crisis has been quite severe with rural parts of the state facing huge power cuts and urban areas better managed.

Even Hyderabad and some of the major cities according to reports reaching here faced power cuts ranging from several hours since last night.

The swearing-in ceremony of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Cabinet was missed by people in parts of the State as there was no power supply.

Since the State is now under the President’s rule, the Government representatives have been pleading with the staff to put of their stir and wait for the formation of popular Governments and later take up their issue with them. Governments in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are expected to be formed after June 2, the appointed date.
