The per capita greenhouse gas emission in Andhra Pradesh at 1.8 tonnes is slightly higher than the all-India average of 1.5 tonnes and neighbouring Tamil Nadu’s at 1.59 tonnes.

This has been brought out by the preliminary findings of a study on Andhra Pradesh Carbon Footprint being carried out by the CII and the State Government.

The final report is expected to be unveiled in the next three to four months and will form the basis of a new strategy to be drawn up by the Government to reduce emission levels. The State Government is targeting a 20-25 per cent reduction of emission intensity per unit of GDP by 2020 (of 2005 levels).

The total GHG emissions in the State were put at 150 milllion tonnes as against 111.8 million tonnes in Tamil Nadu and 1,727 million tonnes at the all-India level.

The final report will recommend a series of measures across sectors, including agriculture, transport and manufacturing, to reduce the carbon footprint in the State.
