Chennai Silks building to be demolished

Chennai Silks’ textile showroom in Chennai, that caught fire early on Wednesday morning will be demolished, said Finance Minister of Tamil Nadu, D Jayakumar.

Addressing media persons today, Jayakumar said special equipment will be brought to demolish the building in three days. He said the company will have to take responsibility for the damaged incurred.

The Minister said provisions of the law will be looked into and the retailer would be held responsible for violations.

Meeting media persons earlier today, the State Revenue Minister RB Udhyakumar, said all efforts are being taken to ensure safety of other buildings in T’ Nagar. An expert committee has been constituted to assess damage in the fire ravaged Chennai Silks’ building, he added.

The seven-storey building, which continued to burn for over 24 hours, partially collapsed on Thursday morning due to excess heat even as fire personnel were trying to douse the fire. The access to the shopping street was cordoned off and stores nearby were shut down for two days in a row.
