The state government has mooted an incentive policy to encourage the brick kiln owners to produce bricks by using fly ash to prevent degradation of environment and infertility of land in Bihar, Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi said today.

“We would like the brick kiln owners to use the fly ash to produce bricks as the material is least hazardous to environment as well as to mitigate infertility of the land,” he said at a function here.

The greater use of coal in production of bricks caused pollution and degrade environment, besides damaging underground soil due to heat at and around brick kiln units, he said.

Pointing out that China has banned brick production at coal-based units as a measure to protect environment and encourage use of fly ash as an alternative raw material, the Deputy Chief Minister said that the state government would also like the domestic brick kiln owner to adopted the same raw material and technique for production of the primary building material in Bihar.

The fly ash will be available in abundance near the thermal power plants in the state in time to come and the brick kiln owners will be encouraged to use raw materials for production of bricks, he said.

Modi said that the training programmes will be held for the brick kiln owners to promote use of fly ash for brick production.

He said that the state government will also seek to utilise sand for production of bricks as the natural material was available in large quantity at the river beds in Bihar.

The state government will prepare a new sand policy for use and marketing of the raw material for revenue, he said.
