Kerala House adjourned amid ‘solar’ heat

The State Assembly resumed on Monday after an enforced recess, only to adjourn after transacting urgent business.

Question hour was allowed to pass after Opposition had brokered peace pre-session with the Speaker. The Government also managed to push through the appropriation Bill before the House adjourned.

These were the only business transacted on a day which saw a strident Opposition march in with placards asking Chief Minister Oommen Chandy to resign over the raging solar scam.

It also sought to move an adjournment motion on the issue.

Speaker G. Karthikeyan stood his ground, prompting members to charge into the well, forcing him to call off the day’s session.

Widespread protest

Emerging out of the House, members of the Opposition took out an impromptu rally.

Elsewhere in the city, marches taken out by youth wings of political parties and affiliated organisations were marred by violence and police action.

Earlier, Leader of Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan alleged in the House that the Chief Minister’s family was involved in the solar scam.

He reiterated the demand that the Chief Minister step down, face a judicial inquiry and come clean. The Opposition would not budge an inch until this happened, he said.

50 cases

Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan informed the House that 50 cases have been registered all over the State under the solar scam.

He also sought to deny an Opposition allegation that the Government was trying to cover up the scam to save the face of a number of people with direct involvement.

UNFOLDING SCAM

The solar scam involves fraudsters masquerading as promoters of solar panel business and swindling crores of rupees from unassuming customers across the State.

The accused were found to have links with the personal staff of the Chief Minister. Even some of his Cabinet colleagues figure in the unfolding plot as new revelations emerge on a daily basis.

Three personal staff of the Chief Minister have resigned or been removed. Shalu Menon, a popular television star, is in jail along with lead accused.
