‘Leaders need cross-cultural competence’

CII-IWN holds annual leadership meet

The business environment is undergoing massive disruption, said Meena Ganesh, Managing Director, Portea Medical, and CEO, Growth Story.

Speaking at the CII-IWN’s Annual Leadership Conference 2016 with the theme ‘Leadership to enable the Change’, Ganesh said, “Companies sometimes stumble when they fail to read the change in time. Sometimes even expert predictions can go wrong for the same reason.”

She opined that a leader should have at least one area of core competence and the ability to work with people in various business domains.

“Leaders need to have cross-cultural competence, be it geographic or demographic. The leaders need to be open to continuous learning, re-learning and filtering of pertinent information,” she added.

Rapid changes Delivering the special address Kris Gopalakrishnan, Past President CII and Co-Founder, Infosys Ltd, said, “We are witnessing rapid changes. Change creates unprecedented avenues for leadership. It is a huge opportunity for us in India to create businesses that are leaders not just in India but globally.”

Elaborating on the principles required to lead change, he said that it is extremely important to internalise what it takes to be a leader and remain always committed.

Gayathri Vasudevan, Chairwoman, IWN Karnataka, and CEO, Labour Net Services India, said successful organisations have to overcome several leadership challenges and develop a focused and proactive strategy to address change.

According to her, IWN acts as a support group for career women.

Geetha Panda, Vice-Chairwoman, IWN Karnataka, advised career women and aspiring professionals to enjoy their careers as much as they enjoyed building homes and to strike a balance between the two.
