Maoists storm NMDC mines in Chhattisgarh

Maoists stormed the mining area of State-owned iron ore major National Mineral Development Corporation facilities in Dhantewada district of Chhattisgarh, and damaged mining equipment late on Sunday night.

There has been no disruption in mining operations, according to Rafeeque Ahmed Jinabade, Chief Communications Officer at NMDC.

About 40-50 armed men had stormed deposit No.5 of NMDC, located under Bacheli in the Bailadilla mines, torched some of equipment and started firing. Forces from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) rushed to the spot and fired back.

Two separate teams have been sent to the affected mining area to assess the damage. In order to ensure no disruption to operations, equipment from other sites is being moved.

The Chhattisgarh Government is learnt to have stepped up coming operations.
