More subsidised canteens to come up across TN

The Tamil Nadu Government will open subsidised canteens in nine more cities along the lines of those operating in Chennai.

The Chief Minister announced in the Assembly today, the canteens, 10 each in Madurai, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Salem, Tiruppur, Tuticorin, Vellore and Erode, will be opened by the month end.

These will be along the lines of the 200 canteens in operation in Chennai. They will sell ‘idlies’ at Re 1 each between 7a.m. and 10a.m. For lunch, from 12p.m. to 3p.m., they will sell ‘sambhar’ rice for Rs 5 a plate and curd rice for Rs 3.

The menu will also be expanded in Chennai due to public demand, she said.

The subsidised canteens in the city will also sell ‘pongal’ for Rs 5 in the mornings and for lunch serve lemon rice and curry rice for Rs 5 each.

The 200 canteens will also sell ‘chapattis’ in the evenings from September onwards once the equipment and vessels to make them are procured. Two ‘chapattis’ with side dish will be sold Rs 3, the Chief Minister announced.
