The small and medium industrial units in Chennai have urged the State government to reconsider the proposed hike in electricity tariff.

The Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association has written to the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider the proposed 30-40 per cent in electricity tariff for Industries.

Small units that cannot afford a Genset are hit hard due to power cuts, and now the steep proposed hike will sound the death knell of MSMEs. So the government should consider this and look at very modest increase for MSMEs, if it is not possible to leave them untouched, the Association said.

Without supporting the MSMEs the Prime Minister’s “Make in India” movement will not result in appreciable growth in employment and exports

Development hindrance

MSMEs look forward for changes in tax and laws to smoothen the way for functioning of MSMEs. The sector known for its potential to create employment and generate export earnings has not had the benefit of easing of regulations from the Government, it said in the letter.
