Rains batter AP; loss put at ₹3,819 crore

Widespread rains in several districts of Andhra Pradesh have inundated a number of villages and towns in Nellore, Kadapa, Chittoor and Prakasham district causing extensive damage. Normal life has been crippled by heavy rains.

While the government machinery has been put on high alert for rescue, relief and rehabilitation, several locations in these districts have been cut off due to road breaches. Thousands of pilgrims have been stranded in the temple town of Tirupati.

Traffic disrupted
According to reports, traffic between Nellore and Chennai has been disrupted near the Tamil Nadu border because of water-logging.

During the day, for a couple of hours, the highway traffic on the Sullurpeta and Doravarisatram was stalled as water was overflowing on the highway by about two feet. The Chennai-bound traffic was restored when water receded later.

TDP member of Parliament Thota Narasimham, who participated in the debate on floods in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh in the Lok Sabha today, said the preliminary estimates put the total loss at about ₹3,819 crore in Andhra Pradesh.

And all trains to and from Chennai remain cancelled.

The rains over the past couple of days are adding to the problems of farmers in the region, who already had to bear the brunt of the recent rains over the past two weeks. There has been extensive damage to crops.
