TN announces mega project plans for southern districts

The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation will promote a Rs 3,500-crore project jointly with the private sector to set up a deep water port and a 500-MW gas-based power project and related infrastructure in South Tamil Nadu.

This was among a number of initiatives, including large industrial projects and incentives to boost industrial development in the southern districts, announced by the Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the Assembly today.

Industrial parks

In Sivagangai district, the existing Manamadurai industrial estate will be expanded by 2,000 acres to establish an industrial park for graphite-based industries.

A 2,000-acre industrial park will come up in Ramanathapuram district for petroleum refinery, chemical and fertiliser industries. Pudukottai district will get a 2,000-acre industrial park for engineering, metal and leather product units.

In Dindigul a 1,500-acre industrial park will be set up for engineering units and food processing units. A 2,000-acre food park will come in Theni district.

In Virudhunagar, a range of industries, including infrastructure for safety matches and fireworks units, food processing industrial park, engineering and printing units, will be encouraged.

A 3,400-acre industrial park will be created to attract these investments, she said.

Investments in marine industries, including ship building and repair units, heavy engineering industries, metal-based and chemical units will be encouraged in Tuticorin district, where a 6,000-acre industrial park will be established.

Renewable energy hub

A 1,500-acre renewable energy hub will be created in Tirunelveli where investments in solar photovoltaic panel making units, household appliances manufacturing units will be encouraged.

In Kanyakumari, marine industries, engineering units, rubber products units and tourism will be encouraged. A 250-acre industrial park will be set up here, she said.

More incentives

Along with the space for investments, the Chief Minister also hiked the incentives to attract investments in the southern districts.

Land in State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu, the Government-run agency handling industrial space, will be provided at 50 per cent cost for industries. The Tamil Nadu Government will compensate the corporation for the subsidy.

Stamp duty for land registration will be fully waived. Investment subsidy will be doubled and the minimum limit of Rs 50-crore investment to avail of Value Added Tax concessions will be reduced to Rs 10 crore, Jayalalithaa said.
