The brutal lynching of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and a bystander in Bulandshahr on Monday is yet another example of the incompetence of BJP governments in the State and the Centre, a united Opposition charged here on Tuesday.

The matter will resonate in the winter session of Parliament scheduled to begin on Friday.

The Congress was critical that the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had not reached out to the family members of the victims.

“He was busy watching a light and sound show. He is silent on the growing number of law and order issues in the State,” former Minister and senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal said, and alleged that an atmosphere of fear is being encouraged by the State government.

‘Increasing attacks’

“Attacks against women increased by 24 per cent. An Apple executive was gunned down by a cop. Encounter killings have become routine. There is no system of law and order in the State,” Sibal accused. He added that the Prime Minister is also silent on such incidents.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M), condemning the killing, alleged the violence is planned with an eye on the Lok Sabha polls. It said the sudden eruption of violent protests took place on the pretext of cow slaughter as carcasses were found under suspicious circumstances in a village in Siana area.

“This fits in with the pattern of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and other Hindutva outfits instigating communal tensions. Such incidents are planned in view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The communally provocative speeches being made by Adityanath have also created an atmosphere for the mobs to act with impunity,” the statement said and demanded firm action against those who have perpetrated the crime.

CPI’s National Secretariat said the incident exposes the tense communal situation in Uttar Pradesh and hooliganism of the so called cow vigilante.

“Party demands that the UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath must address the situation rather than communalising the situation in other States,” the CPI statement said.
