A state prosecutor in a trial concerning the 2007 assassination of Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was shot dead on Friday, police said.

Chaudhry Zulfiqar suffered multiple bullet wounds when attackers on a motorcycle fired at him after intercepting him near his home in Islamabad, police officer Inam ur Rehman told dpa. Zulfiqar’s bodyguard was wounded in the attack.

Zulfiqar was representing the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the case. He was due Friday to attend proceedings into the Bhutto murder case in an anti-terrorism court in the neighbouring garrison town of Rawalpindi.

Pakistan’s former military strongman Pervez Musharraf is also being investigated by the FIA for allegedly providing inadequate security to Bhutto before she was killed in a gun-and-bomb attack blamed on Taliban insurgents.
