Rainfall over the South Peninsula (Tamil Nadu, adjoining Rayalaseema as well as Kerala) will scale up from November 8 to 14, according to the India Met Department (IMD).

An extended weather outlook for the next two weeks issued by the IMD said that the rainfall would be very normal to above normal over the region during this period.

Rainfall pattern

In the ongoing week (November 1 to 7), fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls is likely over Tamil Nadu, Kerala and South Interior Karnataka during the first half.

Overall rainfall activity could be below normal over the South Peninsula while being normal to above normal over the Western Himalayan region during this week.

In this manner, movement of active weather disturbances would cause scattered to fairly widespread precipitation over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Isolated to scattered precipitation has been forecast for Uttarakhand during the first half of the ongoing week. Scattered rainfall is also forecast for Andaman & Nicobar Islands during this period.

Isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, hills of Bengal, and Sikkim on many days of this week.

Over the South Peninsula, the intensity of rainfall would decrease during second half of the ongoing week. As for the rest of South Peninsula, rainfall would be isolated to scattered.

Heavy rain forecast

India Met Department said this morning that conditions are favourable for commencement of  North-East monsoon rains over entire Tamil Nadu, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka and Rayalaseema.

Forecast for the rest of today (November 2) said that heavy rain is likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, South Interior Karnataka and Kerala.

Satellite pictures revealed Chennai remaining cloudy at around 11 am while it is raining/drizzling over Ambur, Vellur, Tiruttani, Kanchipuram and Maduranthakam in the neighbourhood.

To the South, Neyveli, Mayiladuthurai and Nagapattinam are wet/drenched, while a steady drizzle is over Namakkal and heavier over the Sathur, Aruppukottai, Peraiyur, Rajapalayam and Kovilpatti.

This wet belt extended to Rajapalaiyam, Kumbam, Bodinayakkanur and Kodaikanal. Rains are also being recorded over parts of Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and North Interior Karnataka.

During the next three days, however, the rainiest corridor would be one extending South-West from Karaikudi to Madurai, Sivaganga, Manamadurai, Kovilpatti, Kayathar, Pulavnoor, Tirunelvali, Nanguneri and Nagercoil even as the rains remain light to moderate over the rest of Tamil Nadu.
