The students’ protest over rejoining of the Vice-Chancellor, P Appa Rao, after his long leave turned tense on Tuesday as students attacked his office, official residence and broke furniture.

Appa Rao had gone on leave after a Dalit Ph.D scholar, Rohit Vemula, committed suicide after he was suspended from hostel along other some other students of Ambedkar Student Association (ASA) as part of disciplinary action in January.

Mediapersons, who went to cover a press conference to be held at 11.30 am today, also attracted the wrath of the students and were pushed away from the VC’s lodge, the venue of the news conference.

The protest is still on even as a large police force descended on the campus.

The students are demanding action on the VC and union ministers Smriti Irani and Bandaru Dattatreya for alleged discrimination against the Dalit students and driving Rohit to the extreme step.
