The death toll from a mudslide in the western United States reached 24 late Monday, as officials reduced the number off missing from 30 to 22.

No survivors have been located in the huge debris field since the immediate aftermath of the March 22 disaster, when a 1.5-kilometre ridge gave way above the small logging town of Oso around 100 kilometres north-east of Seattle following a record-breaking month of rains in Washington state.

The Snohomish County medical examiner has so far identified 17 of the 24 fatalities, up from 21 dead and 15 identified late Sunday.
