With International Women’s Day (March 8) round the corner, it’s once again time to dwell on the hard work put in by our country’s women.

While Shanta in Dhule, Maharashtra, is carrying fodder for cattle in her own home, an unpaid job for her, it is interesting to know that rural wages for five agricultural operations — ploughing, sowing, weeding, transplanting and harvesting — have shown rapid growth during the 2000s.
