The Government has cleared the decks for broad-basing the management structure of joint sector power utility Damodar Valley Corporation.

The Union Cabinet, which met here on Thursday, has approved the introduction of a Bill in Parliament to amend the existing provisions and enable the induction of independent professionals and experts into the top brass of the company.

Under the proposed structure, the DVC board will have four full-time members, which includes a Chairman, and six part-time members. The part-time members would include those representing the Centre and the state governments of Jharkhand and West Bengal, as well as independent experts in the field of irrigation, water supply and electricity transmission, an official statement said.

Currently, DVC has a Chairman and two members representing Jharkhand and West Bengal. The Bill to amend Damodar Valley Corporation Act will be introduced in the ensuing session of Parliament, it said. The changes in the management structure are brought about in line with the recommendations of a study by the Hyderabad-based Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI).

DVC, which was constituted by an Act of Parliament in 1948, was mandated with the responsibility of ensuring the integrated development of the Damodar river valley.
