West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo, Mamata Banerjeee, on Tuesday said that her party was ready to support a no-confidence motion moved by the Left Front parties, including the CPI (M).

According to the Chief Minister, Trinamool will support “any party” as long as it is opposed to the “anti-people polices” of the Congress-led UPA-II at the Centre.

“If the CPI (M) is opposed to supporting the Trinamool; then they can bring in the no-confidence motion. I have no problems in supporting the CPI (M) or the other Left Parties on the issue as long as it is genuine,” Banerjee told reporters at Writers’ Buildings this afternoon.

Opening up of the retail sector (FDI in retail) and reducing the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders were two issues which saw Trinamool’s acrimonious exit from UPA-II at the Centre in September.

On Saturday (November 18), Banerjee had announced that her party would move a no confidence motion against the UPA-II at the upcoming winter session of Parliament. The winter session begins November 22.

According to Banerjee, she had called up CPI MP Gurudas Dasgupta on Monday after reading reports that the CPI was willing to support a no confidence motion against the UPA-II (even if it was brought by the Trinamool).

“I told him (Dasgupta) that I am willing to support a no confidence motion even if it is brought by CPI or CPI (M). But the CPI (M) should not withdraw the motion mid-way,” Banerjee added.

Support from at least 50 MPs are required to bring in a no confidence motion. Banerjee’s Trinamool has 19 members (MPs) in the Lok Sabha.
