US, South Korea to hold joint military exercises this month

South Korean and the United States military forces said on Monday that they would go ahead with the joint exercises planned for later this month.

Two separate military exercises, one computer-based and one based in the field, will begin on February 24, the Combined Forces Command said.

The two exercises will together involve over 200,000 South Korean forces, and over 12,000 US personnel,

Yonhap news agency reported.

The announcement comes as the North and South are in talks to arrange reunions of families separated in the Korean War, also at the end of February.

North Korea had been informed of the “non-provocative nature” of the drills, the military said.

Pyongyang has asked the two countries to call off the exercises.
