Coal India today said that it will fulfil its target of supplying 377 million tonnes to the country’s power utilities in 2013-14. “We will give coal to all power stations having PPAs (power purchase agreements) with discoms in 2013-14. It’s an open challenge,” said CIL Chairman S. Narsing Rao. The company supplied 344 mt to power utilities in the last fiscal, up from 312 mt in 2010-11. Overall coal supplies to power sector grew by 10.2 per cent. “Total electricity generation grew by a mere four per cent, riding on nearly 13 per cent growth in coal-based generation.
Excluding approximately 2 mt additional supplies by Singareni Collieries, the rest of the growth should be credited to CIL,” he said. Quoting Central Electricity Authority, Rao said the aggregate coal stock in power plants was approximately 20 mt – enough to sustain generation for 16 days – at the end of the last fiscal. “This is a new record as the country ended previous years with an average of 6-7 days stock,” he added. CIL targets to supply nearly 494 mt in 2013-14.
