Coimbatore gets second Tribes India showroom

The second Tribes India showroom in Tamil Nadu has come up at Coimbatore. This souvenir shop is next only to the outlet in Kanyakumari district in the State.

Secretary, Ministry of Panchayati Raj and Tribal Affairs, Government of India Loretta Mary Vas inaugurated the showroom at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here on Thursday.

TRIFED (Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India), an agency under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, engaged primarily in the development and marketing of traditional tribal products is looking to expand the Tribes India showroom network across the country.

The Federation has already established a chain of 31 unique showrooms across the country.

Exclusive products including metal craft, textile items, jewellery, paintings, gifts and assortments, natural products and pottery made by tribal artisans across the country are marketed through these outlets. Jiji Thomson, Managing Director, TRIFED, said that the current year’s sales target from these showrooms has been pegged at Rs 14 crore against Rs 9 crore achieved last year

The federation as sanctioned Rs 25 lakh to the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University for undertaking a project which involves preparation of commodity profile and drawing up training modules for the 11 minor forest produce and conducting periodical training to tribal people.
