Tata Motors today told the Calcutta High Court that the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act 2011 was legislated in the interest of Trinamool Congress sympathisers. “The Government has repeatedly said in conferences, public meetings and interviews that the Act is in the interest of those persons who had supported the party (Trinamool) in the elections,” counsel for Tata Motors Mr Samaraditya Pal said on Thursday.
The company moved to court challenging the Constitutional validity of the Singur Act. According to Mr Pal, the Act provides for the take over of Singur land by the West Bengal government and returns a portion of it to “unwilling” farmers who have not accepted compensation.
Recalling the events, Mr Pal emphasised that “there were compelling circumstances” and that “there was no voluntary component in the decision (by the auto major) to move (relocate to Gujarat from Singur).”
