Tata Power will add 150 MW of wind and 35 MW of solar energy to its renewable energy portfolio this fiscal, at a cost of about Rs 1,300 crore.

Tata Power's renewable energy portfolio comprises 450 MW of hydroelectric power, 240 MW of wind, and 3 MW of solar. In addition, the company's subsidiary, NDPL, has commissioned a 1 MW grid connected rooftop solar unit in Delhi.

Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, Mr S. Ramakrishnan, Executive Director (Finance), said 150 MW of wind project will come up in Tamil Nadu (near Coimbatore) and Karnataka.

On solar power, he said Tata Power is implementing a 25-MW project at Mithapur, Gujarat, for which it had signed a power purchase agreement with the Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Ltd under the State solar power policy of 2009. The per MW cost was Rs 15 crore, and the PPA according to the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission tariff for solar power generation was Rs 15 per kwh for the initial 12 years starting from the date of project's commercial operation, and Rs 5 a kwh from the 13th year to 25th year. The project is scheduled for commissioning this December.

Tata Power will also commission 10 MW of solar power on the rooftops of the Tata Motors plants and at Mulshi this fiscal.

3 MW ON GRID

Tata Power grid-connected 3-MW solar plant at Mulshi in Maharashtra has become operational and the power generated will be purchased by Tata Power- Distribution for its Mumbai customers. The photovoltaic power plant is said to be one of the largest in the country and is spread over 12 acres near Pune.

Mr S. Padmanabhan, Executive Director (Operations), said the State regulator had fixed Rs 17.91 a unit for the solar power purchased in the current year. On revenues, the plant would yield about Rs 8.5crore annually, with generation in the range of 13 million units.

He said the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission had adopted the renewable power obligation (RPO) which sought obligatory renewable energy purchase by electricity distribution companies. The RPO from the current three MW (from Mulshi unit) would go up to eight MW, he said.

TARGET

Tata Power plans to generate 25,000 MW by 2017 and intends to have a 20-25 per cent contribution from ‘clean power sources' which will include a mix of hydro, solar, wind, geothermal and waste gas generation.
