As the number of vehicles rise, so do traffic, pollution and road fatalities. But, data analytics could play a huge role in reducing these, and so will better utilisation of public transport, say experts.

For instance, Intel has partnered with NITI Aayog and Tata Institute for the first international Centre for Transformation of AI (ICTAI) to build the platform to use Artificial Intelligence to build innovative solution in the space of mobility, agriculture and health.

Intel India is also working on a solution to predict blind spots on roads at intersections and turnings, where the probability of accidents is high, across Telangana and Goa in collaboration with the local governments.

Nivruti Rai, Country Head, Intel India, said, he system sends warning alerts to drivers when approaching the spot, helping them make a quick decision. Governments can use the data to fix the problem. Intel India is also partnering with IIIT-Hyderabad to make a data set of Indian driving conditions.

Microsoft to train drivers

Microsoft Research India is working with Delhi’s Institute of Driving and Traffic Research, a joint venture between the government and Maruti Suzuki, to reduce fatalities through various initiatives such as driver training. The project, Harnessing AutoMobiles for Safety (HAMS), uses smartphones and data analytics to detect the condition of the driver, using various parameters, and sends data to the supervisor.

At a time when data are giving rise in innovation, data analytics and mobility of data will become good commerce, said Union IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad at the Global Mobility Summit here on Friday.

Panel on AI

For that purpose, the government has formed a national committee on Artificial Intelligence and also on data safety and analysis.

But, to ensure that data are used for betterment of people, “we need to create centralised data system by the government and non-government agencies to fine tune the policy,” Prasad added. At all times, one needs to ensure that data are not abused and there is a balance of how much data are utilised for innovation protecting anonymity and privacy.
