Canon India to unveil products for movie industry

Camera maker Canon is sharpening focus on the Indian movie market. Having launched its first movie camera in the Indian market two months ago, the company is now planning to expand its portfolio of offerings in this segment.

“Movie cameras will be a major growth driver for us in the next two years, as India has the highest number of movie releases, including regional films,” Alok Bharadwaj, Senior Vice-President, told Business Line.

With the recent rupee slide and sinking consumer sentiment denting its non-camera business, Canon India sees movie and other cameras holding up its bottom line this fiscal.

C 300

The firm has sold 14 pieces of its recently launched movie camera, C 300, the first of its kind in the Indian market, including one each for the Telugu and Malayalam film industries.

“With new offerings in this space, we are targeting a sale of 100 pieces in 2013,” he said.

The product, which was also launched recently in Hollywood, is a hand-held video camera, with HD movie capturing features.

Unlike the existing movie cameras having fixed lenses in India, this product provides the facility of changing the lens. It comes with a combination of 60 lenses, with a price tag of about Rs 13 lakh.

High-end 4K model

It is now planning to introduce a high-end 4K model, which will have a resolution sharper than a full HD (high definition) movie camera.

“We may introduce this product from Canon’s global portfolio in December. It would cost in the range of Rs 30 lakh,” Bharadwaj said.
