Nearly 97 per cent of the 14,800 Coal India officers stayed away from duty on Thursday, the first day of a three-day strike called by the Coal Mine Officers’ Association of India (CMOI).
The agitation was called in protest against prolonged indecision on payment of performance-related pay (PRP). Agreed in the 2007 wage agreement, the payment could not be released due to problems in the guidelines issued by the Department of Public Enterprises.
“There was unprecedented participation in the strike. Even in CIL headquarters, 90 per cent of officers did not join duty,” AV Sahay, a central committee member of CMOI, told
Around 5,000 management trainees were exempted from the strike, he said.
CIL Chairman Narsing Rao said the company is yet to ascertain the impact of the strike.
Meanwhile, there has been some effort from the Union Government to resolve the issue.
