Bid to give a push to stalled private sector projects

Public sector hydro power generator NHPC Ltd said it would look at providing construction management consultancy and operations and management services to stalled private sector projects for a charge.

“Private players want some relief by offering the projects to NHPC. But we do not want to take them over given the debt burden with these plants,” KM Singh, the company’s Chairman and Managing Director, said at a media briefing.

Singh said that three projects in Sikkim have been offered, one in Madhya Pradesh and three projects in Arunachal Pradesh.

The company is in talks with the Sikkim Government on the projects in the North-Eastern State. The three projects are a 520-MW project of Lanco Group, a 320-MW project of Nagarjuna Power and 120-MW project of the Jaypee Group.

“For Arunachal Pradesh, the projects are owned by Jindal Power Ltd. Talks there are at very early stage,” Singh said.

On NHPC’s own project Subansiri Lower, that is stuck, Singh said the company has to wait for the Assam elections to get over. “It needs the state government support. There has been significant cost escalation since the project has been delayed by four years,” Singh said adding that work will start only after the elections.
