Nissan Motor India (NMIPL) today reported domestic sales of 1,588 units in the month of May as compared to 56 units in May 2010.

The domestic sales have been driven by compact car Micra, the first model to be produced at its Chennai plant that was launched in India in July last year. The model clocked 1,566 units during May 2011, the company said.

Before the launch of Micra, the company has been selling fully imported SUV Xtrail, Teana sedan and the 370Z sports car. These models comprised the rest of the May 2011 sales, the company said without giving the break up.

“Our domestic sales performance in May is very encouraging and demonstrates Nissan’s long term commitment to sustainably increase our presence within the Indian market,” NMIPL Managing Director and CEO, Mr Kiminobu Tokuyama said in a statement.

The company said it has started exporting the Micra to South Africa from last month.
