As part of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam’s expansion project, structural erection work, equipment erection of boiler and other civil works began at its 120-MW blast furnace gas-based captive power plant here.

Chairman and Managing Director A.P Choudhary, who launched the works being taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 677 crore, said it was a unique power plant utilising 100 per cent blast furnace gas for power generation. He said it was an important milestone in the expansion project. RINL plans to add another 120 MW of power to the present capacity by using NEDO technology… taking the total power generation capacity to around 400 MW. “RINL has to be self-sufficient in power generation, a critical area for survival and growth of the company,” he said.

He stressed the need for timely completion of the project. He urged union leaders to suggest additional safety measures, if required, at construction sites.

He also launched erection works of oxygen pressure reducing station (PRS) for SMS-2. The PRS will supply oxygen to the new steel melt shop LD convertor.
