An unappetising impost!

It doesn't matter if you are a teetotaller. Your food bill will go up if you choose to eat in an air-conditioned restaurant that serves liquor.

The Finance Minister has proposed to widen the service tax net to cover hotel accommodation above Rs 1,000 per night and air-conditioned restaurants serving liquor.

As a result, air-conditioned restaurants that serve liquor will have to pay service tax of 10 per cent on the total bill amount. The restaurants will, in turn, pass it on to their customers.
