The Tamil Nadu Government is to set up a high-level committee to revamp the handloom and textiles sector, according to an official press release.
This was among the decisions taken at a review meeting headed by Mr B.V. Ramanaa, Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, according to an official press release.
In line with its election promises relating to the textiles and handloom sector, the Government is keen on expeditiously implementing proposals aimed at revamping the handloom and textile sector.
The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which has come to power, has assured that the handloom co-operatives would be rejuvenated, weavers would be trained to enable production exportable, modern apparels and ornamental products, establish 10 new apparel parks and a handloom export organisation would be set up in public-private partnership to encourage exports.
The high-level committee would look at ways to support the growth of handloom and weavers' co-operatives, development of weaving units and implementation of welfare measures for weavers.
Schemes to improve sales and profitability of Cooptex, the co-operative textile sales organisation, were also discussed.
The Ministry is also taking steps for the timely distribution of free school uniforms for students studying in classes 1-8. This programme is being implemented at a cost of Rs 50 crore. Production of ‘dhotis' and sarees for free distribution in time for the 2012 ‘Pongal' harvest festival is to start soon, the release said.
