Tea loses steam at N. India auctions

This week, the total offerings (packages) at Sale 05 at the three North Indian tea auction centres of Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri were 338,597 against 402,254 in the corresponding sale last year, indicating gradual closing of the tea season, according to tea auctioneers J. Thomas & Company Private Ltd, .

Of this, the share of Kolkata auction was 161,401 (153,637), comprising 146,591 (143,719) of CTC/dust, 12,397 (19,294) of orthodox, and 2,413 (624) of Darjeeling. The corresponding offerings at Guwahati and Siliguri were 82,498 (158,939) and 94,698 (79,678).

Selected clean, well-made and liquoring Assam CTCs were around last week's level. The remainder were irregularly easier in line with quality. Few better Dooars were firm around last week's level while the remainder were irregular.

Fair support

There was fair support from Tata Global and Hindustan Unilever. Western India operated actively on better liquoring teas. Some export enquiries were on bolder brokens and grainier fannings. Local dealers and other internal buyers operated on cleaner grainier varieties.
