Some markets in and around the onion growing centres in Maharashtra have been closed again this week but there are two reasons offered for the closure.
Dr R.P. Gupta, Director of the National Horticultural Research Development and Foundation, said markets are closed for March-ending.
Traders in the region differ with the version, saying markets are shut because there is no space for storing huge quantities of onions that are arriving at different centres.
On Friday, Pune Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee yard, saw the highest arrival of 2,432 tonnes. Arrivals at Kolhapur were 1,700 tonnes and at Lasalgaon, they were 1,500 tonnes. Two weeks ago, markets such as Lasalgaon were shut due to lack of space on flooding arrivals.
