Nearly 60 per cent of the turmeric kept for sale at Erode markets did not find any takers on Thursday.

“For want of upcountry demand, many traders did not purchase the turmeric. Of the arrival of 5,300 bags, 2,100 were sold and the price and sales may increase only after getting fresh upcountry demand,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

Because of the arrival of medium and low quality turmeric in the Regulated Market Committee, the price of the finger turmeric decreased by ₹650 a quintal and the root variety by ₹400. The price of root turmeric in the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association was down ₹100, but that of the finger turmeric was up ₹150.

At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹5,139-8,098 a quintal; the root variety ₹5,036-7,168. Of the arrival of 1,248 bags, 410 were sold.

At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric fetched ₹6,069-7,249 and the root variety ₹6,066-6,940. Of the 672 bags offered, 555 were traded.

At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹6,299-7,259; the root variety ₹6,214-7,089. Of the 1,471 bags placed for sale, 1,458 were sold.
