Rice procurement at 9.04 mn tonnes in kharif 2011—12 bl-premium-article-image

Rice procurement stood at 9.04 million tonnes in the current kharif marketing season (October—September) so far.

According to the official data, 90,46,356 tonnes of rice has been procured by various government agencies by November 4, 2011.

Punjab has procured 69,56,290 tonnes, while Haryana and Tamil Nadu have procured 18,09,194 tonnes and 1,76,486 tonnes, respectively in the 2011—12 kharif season so far.

Food Corporation of India (FCI), government’s nodal procurement agency, along with other government agencies have procured more than 34 million tonnes rice in the kharif marketing season 2010—11.

Andhra Pradesh has led the states by procuring 9.61 million tonnes of rice.

Punjab follows AP with 8.63 million tonnes, Chhattisgarh at 3.74 million tonnes, Uttar Pradesh 2.55 million tonnes, Orissa 2.46 million tonnes and Haryana with 1.68 million tonnes of rice.

The country has produced 95.32 million tonnes of rice in 2010—11 crop year (July—June) and the government has set the target of producing 102 million tonnes of the essential food crop in the 2011—12 crop year.
