Housing for all may not be just a slogan any more.

With the government granting the infrastructure tag to the affordable housing sector, the segment is expected to see a rev-up in demand, with corporate entities investing in smaller ticket projects

Additionally, developers will have easy access to credit line.

“Granting infrastructure status to affordable housing will provide a boost in volume of construction activity across the country,” said Joe Verghese, MD, Colliers International India.

Rashmi Deshpande, Partner, Real Estate, Khaitan & Co said: “The criteria for low cost housing has been changed from built-up area of 30/60 sq m to carpet area of 30/60 sq m, thus making the low-cost housing segment more lucrative for builders and buyers. Now, purchasers get more spacious homes and builders can market the property to a larger segment of buyers.”

“The one-year tax exemption post completion of project definitely comes as a breather. It will help with liquidity issues and those holding inventory,” said Anand Piramal, ED, Piramal Group.
