The Union Budget has allocated ₹6,626 crore for railway projects in Tamil Nadu for the fiscal 2025-26. This is slightly higher than the ₹6,326 crore allocated in 2024-25.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the budgetary outlay for Tamil Nadu Rail development projects for 2025-26 was 7.5 times the average outlay of ₹879 crore allocated for 2009-2014.
A total of 22 projects spanning across 2,587 km, costing ₹33,467 crore, are in progress in Tamil Nadu. Further, 77 railway stations are being redeveloped under Amrit Station Scheme at a cost of ₹2,948 crore.
The minister said 601 works are in progress for the commissioning of Kavach Safety systems at a sanctioned cost of ₹1,460 crore in the state of Tamil Nadu.
In Tamil Nadu, 2,242 km of railway tracks have been electrified, which is nearly 94 per cent of the total tracks.
The minister said the budgetary outlay for Kerala Rail development projects is ₹3,042 crore for 2025-26, which is eight times the average outlay of ₹372 crore allotted for 2009-2014.
Eight projects spanning 419 km, costing ₹12,350 crore, are in progress in Kerala. Further, 35 railway stations in the State are being redeveloped under Amrit Station Scheme at a cost of ₹2,560 crore, he said.
