The Coal Ministry has written to the Coal Controller to collect additional levy from the owners of operational coal blocks which had been de-allocated by the Supreme Court on September 24.

The court had imposed a levy on those mines which were operating and will continue to be in operation till March 31, 2015, when the de-allocation becomes effective. Though the Ministry has not given any estimates, the levy is expected to fetch about ₹10,500 crore.

“In exercise of powers conferred by...the Coal Mines (Special Provisions) Ordinance, 2014...the Central Government hereby authorise Coal Controller Organisation to collect the amount of additional levy from the prior allotees,” the Coal Ministry said.
