The Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) is planning to introduce trigeneration gas engines of about 60 MWs for corporate and industrial clients in the country, a top official told media persons on Thursday.

EESL is a joint venture company under the Power Ministry, with a mandate to implement sustainable technologies and services in the country. Trigeneration gas engines can generate heat, electricity and cooling, which has a variety of industrial applications.

₹700-crore capex

Saurabh Kumar, MD of the company, said the company would require a capex of about ₹700 crore to enter the new area. EESL has enough funds for its capex plan as it has already raised about $2.5 billion as loans from multilateral funding agencies.

The company in March 2018 had acquired Edina, a UK-based supplier, installer and maintenance provider for combined heat and power (CHP), gas, and diesel power generation solutions. Edina’s gas engines will be used for developing the new market, he said.

Kumar pointed out that a complete customised solution will be offered to clients such as hotels, hospitals and industrial units, catering to their requirements for heating, cooling and electricity requirements. When the clients shift to gas engines, their overall energy consumption will be reduced by 15 to 20 per cent. For supplying gas to the end consumers, MoUs have already been signed with GAIL and Mahanagar Gas Ltd.

Pact with M&M

He added that EESL has also signed an agreement with Mahindra & Mahindra to install and service a trigeneration project of 803 kW capacity with an investment of ₹25 crore. Similar commitments have also been received from JJ Hospital in Mumbai and Sasson Hospital in Pune.

The UK-based Edina was acquired by EESL for ₹493 crore.
