Infosys co-founder and Chairman Emeritus N R Narayana Murthy on Friday requested the Centre to promote an investor-friendly “business atmosphere”. According to him, such an environment will help boost both domestic as well as foreign investments that will help poverty and unemployment.

Narayana Murthy’s comments come days after the Union Corporate Affairs Minister Veerappa Moily spoke of the Government’s plan to put in place a business index. The index will help build competitiveness and create a friendly environment, allowing corporations to conduct businesses efficiently.

“This is the time to request the Government to be much more proactive in helping entrepreneurship, FDI and domestic investment so that they can create millions of jobs,” he told reporters on the sidelines of a scholarship distribution programme by the “Anant” foundation.

The foundation provides scholarships to meritorious students to pursue higher studies after successful completion of high-school education.

High Unemployment

The problem of increasing youth unemployment in the country, Narayana Murthy said, could be resolved through entrepreneurship.

“I think that is where (on the issue of the unemployment) we should encourage entrepreneurship in the country. We should encourage lots of FDI in India. That’s the only way we can solve poverty and unemployment,” he added.

Government Policies

When asked whether Government policies were moving towards the right direction in terms of job creation, Narayana Murthy called on the Government and private sector to work with greater understanding.

“There is no point in simply criticising the Government. Let us look at how we can all work together in creating more and more jobs,” Narayana Murthy said.
