2 killed, 50 injured in rail mishap

Two people were killed and rail traffic between south and north Bengal was disrupted following a train accident near Malda. The Guwahati-Bengaluru Express and a passenger train derailed after a collision between the two on Sunday.

Saying that an operation was on to clear the debris, Railway sources hoped both up and down lines would be operational by later tonight.

Meanwhile, Eastern Railway sources said here that Mr R.P. Yadav, Commissioner of Railway Safety, Eastern Circle, Kolkata, will hold a statutory inquiry into the accident.

Special train

In order to clear the extra rush of passengers, Eastern Railway ran a super fast Garib Rath Special train from Kolkata to Guwahati today.

The condition of five of the 50 injured passengers was said to be serious.

“The accident took place in the Malda division between Jamirghata and Gourghata stations,” said a railway spokesman. A relief train has left from Howrah.

The Inspector General of Police (North Bengal), Mr Ranvir Kumar, said police personnel have also reached the accident spot.
