The Jawaharlal Nehru port will have to part with 165 hectares of developed land to the project-affected people around the port. This follows a decision taken on Tuesday in New Delhi between the Ministers from Maharashtra and the Union Shipping Minister.
The allotment of land will be under the State Government's guidelines on earmarking 12.5 per cent of the developed land to people replaced by a project.
A group of projected affected people has been demanding allotment of land under the scheme. The meeting was attended by the Maharashtra Water Resources Minister, Mr Sunil Tatkare, the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, and the Union Shipping Minister, Mr G.K. Vasan.
A statement issued by the Maharashtra State information centre said the decision of rehabilitating the affected people located in the villages of Phunde and Ranjanpada around the JNPT has come as a major breakthrough for the Maharashtra Government and the Central Government. The project-affected people had been staging agitations and protests for the past 20 years demanding for their piece of developed land.
