Chennai Metro sees 15% surge in passengers in 2024, reaching 11 crore riders

Since its inception on June 29, 2015, CMRL has served 36 crore passengers

Chennai Metro Rail witnessed a 15 per cent increase in patronage in 2024, with 11 crore passengers travelling in the rail network, compared with 9 crore in 2023, according to a release.

CMRL commenced metro train operations on June 29, 2015, and has become the lifeline for the people of Chennai. A release says a total of 36 crore passengers travelled in the Chennai metro between June 29, 2015, and December 31, 2024.

CMRL offers a 20 per cent discount on all ticketing (Metro Travel Card, Mobile QR Code ticketing—Single, Return, Group Tickets and Q.R Trip passes, Whatsapp, Paytm, PhonePe and NCMC Card). The release said passengers can now also book their tickets through the CMRL Whatsapp Ticketing System (+91 83000 86000) and Paytm.
