Loss-making carriers Jet Airways and SpiceJet are in talks with Abu Dhabi's Etihad Airways and Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd, respectively, to sell minority stakes, a government source said. Any deal would be the first since India changed its rules in September 2012 to allow foreign carriers to buy stakes of up to 49 percent in local airlines, which have been battered by fierce competition and high operating costs. In a landmark development, Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and IBS Software (IBS) have signed a contract to enhance the airline’s operations.

IBS, a leading provider of new generation IT travel solutions, was selected to replace the airline’s existing network control system and develop a hub management system, allowing the airline’s employees to move away from manual processes to highly intuitive technology.

This is expected to help Etihad increase its on-time performance, improve operational efficiency, maintain network integrity and to enhance hub connectivity, a press release said.

Under the contract, Etihad Airways would use IBS solutions to automate the monitoring and management of guests and baggage journeys, especially when the journey involves a connection through the airline’s Abu Dhabi Hub.

At a global level, the technology would allow for more efficient aircraft assignment and flight tracking, throughout the airline’s network.

The new systems would also enable enhanced situational awareness through dashboards and alerts presented to the operational control team, as well as faster and more effective decision making for operational issues through suggested resolutions.

“Through this strategic partnership, we are delighted to integrate IBS technology into our control centres to fulfil our commitment to delivering exceptional service,” Vice President Global Airports &Network Operations, Etihad Airways, John Wright said.

VK Mathews, Executive Chairman of IBS Group said this deal demonstrates the industry acceptance of IBS’s technology solutions to effectively support the needs of an airline renowned for its disciplined business practices.
