Offering a respite to commuters from the heat, the Chennai Division of Southern Railway on Saturday introduced the first air-conditioned EMU train service between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu.
The AC suburban train service is expected to register high footfalls. The service will be a boon for commuters during the peak hours and the hot and humid weather conditions. The AC EMU service was first introduced in the Mumbai suburban and has steady patronage among commuters, especially office-goers and women travellers, a statement said.
The modern AC EMU rake is equipped with facilities for passengers like automatic doors, passenger information systems, CCTV cameras and well-marked entry/exit points.
The first AC EMU train left Chennai Beach at 7 am on Saturday. “Train No.49003/49004 and Train No.49005/49006 Chennai Beach - Chengalpattu - Chennai Beach air-conditioned EMU services commenced in both directions except on Sundays,” says a release.
The fare between Chennai Beach and Chengalpattu will be ₹105.
