The Centre is actively considering a new policy initiative to promote Indian shipbuilding in the 12th Plan period, said Union Shipping Minister G.K. Vasan.

The policy will help Indian shipbuilding yards competitive in both the domestic and export markets, he said in his inaugural speech of the third southern region shipping conclave organised by the Southern India Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Chennai Custom House Agents’ Association.

A strong ship repair industry, world-class research and development facilities, design capabilities and ancillary base for commercial shipbuilding are the areas of focus, he said.
