IndiGo will be the first airline to operate flights from Navi Mumbai airport upon its opening —tentatively fixed in August end.

The company will operate over 18 daily departures (36 flights) to 15 cities from day one, the airline said on Wednesday after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Navi Mumbai International Airport. This will be increased to 79 daily departures (158 flights ), including 14 international departures, by the beginning of November and doubled by November 2026.

Sources said IndiGo’s initial flights from Navi Mumbai would be a mix of new services and flights shifted from Mumbai. However, the company did not disclose the destinations it will serve from the airport.

“Our alliance signals towards the achievement of complete operational readiness on both sides to take the next steps. This expansion underscores our dedication to catering to the evolving needs of our aspirational travellers and further contributing to the growth of India’s booming aviation sector,” IndiGo’s chief executive officer Pieter Elbers said in a statement.

Transfer hub

Adani Airport Holdings Ltd CEO Arun Bansal said the partnership marks Navi Mumbai airport’s position as a transfer hub for domestic and international travellers. The airport is in discussions with other domestic airlines and assisting them in developing their networks.

Sources said the runway and taxiways at Navi Mumbai are ready. “Internal work in the terminal and work in the forecourt is underway. Similarly road connectivity works are still ongoing. The onset of monsoon is the only concern.Otherwise, the works are on schedule,” said an aviation source.

Initially, the airport was supposed to be inaugurated in June.

In its first phase the Navi Mumbai airport will have a capacity to handle 20 million passengers and 0.5 million tonnes of cargo per year.
